Garden Spotlight: Vergennes Community Garden

GroupShot       On the far side of town, abutting Northland Job Corps Center property, the Vergennes Community Garden sits at the top of a picturesque hill, overlooking the Adirondack Mountains beyond Lake Champlain. In this peaceful place, a small group of gardeners find a place to grow food and flowers and meet their green thumb neighbors. Among the gardeners are a number who’ve been growing in community since the garden’s inception in 2009, families looking to extend beyond their backyards, a UVM agriculture grad student, Job Corps staff and students overseeing a small plot for the Culinary Arts program, and garden coordinator, Miriam Hill. The garden is fortunate to receive support from the City of Vergennes and have been regular benefactors of Northland Job Corps projects (including the garden’s shed, compost bins, and watering system).   As she looks toward the future, Miriam wonders about the potential for getting more local groups involved in growing food on this great swath of land. In the meantime, a beautiful season’s ahead for the Vergennes Community Garden.IMG_2647
